Stop Your Fox ESS Battery Being Depleted by EV Charging

If you install a Shelly EM Gen3 or Shelly EM on your EV charger's mains connection, EnergyDroid integrates with the Shelly device to detect when your EV is charging.

When EnergyDroid detects your EV is charging (via the Shelly device), it will charge your Fox battery, making use of the cheap whole home electricity rate. When the EV stops charging, EnergyDroid stops the Fox battery charging too.

How It Works

Once set up, EnergyDroid will fetch the status of your Shelly EM device once every 60 seconds. This runs on EnergyDroid's Cloud, not on your phone, so it doesn't rely on your phone's internet connection.

As soon as EnergyDroid detects your EV is charging, it will take one of three actions (you can pick which one in the schedule settings):

Force Charge

Automatically charges your Fox battery. Your EV charger and home both use mains electricity, plus you charge your Fox battery with the cheap electricity.

Backup (Stop Discharging)

Stops the Fox battery from discharging. Your EV charger and home both use electricity from the grid.

Self Use (Keep Discharging)

Keeps your Fox battery discharging. Can be useful if you need to urgently "max charge" your EV without waiting for IOG to schedule the charge, when you'd be paying peak rates for the charge instead of off-peak rates.

Setting Up the Shelly Integration

Install a Shelly EM Gen3 or Shelly EM on your EV charger's power feed
Connect the Shelly EM to the official Shelly app for iPhone/iPad or Android — the app auto-detects new devices via Bluetooth
In the official Shelly app, click the Generate API Key option
Copy and paste the API Key and Server URL from the Shelly app to the EnergyDroid app
In the EnergyDroid app:
- Tap Settings at the bottom of the screen
- Tap Integrations
- Tap the + symbol to add a new integration
- Set the Integration Type to Shelly
- Enter the API Key from the Shelly app
- Enter the Server URL from the Shelly app

Where to Buy a Shelly EM

Shelly EM devices are available from Shelly's European store and several UK retailers. The Shelly European store tends to be the cheapest (often £15–20 cheaper), though delivery can take a few days as they ship from Europe.
